According to a statement by Egypt’s Foreign Ministry, FM Abdelatty made the remarks on Monday during a meeting with Guang Cong, the United Nations (UN) special envoy for the Horn of Africa, on the sidelines of the fifth Aswan Forum for Sustainable Peace and Development. The Egyptian foreign minister emphasized the close connection between Egypt’s national security and developments in Sudan, highlighting Cairo’s role in advancing the political process, achieving a ceasefire, and facilitating humanitarian access. FM Abdelatty urged the international community to fulfil its financial and humanitarian pledges to Sudan and called for greater cooperation in reconstruction and burden-sharing with neighbouring countries hosting Sudanese refugees. The two officials discussed developments in the Horn of Africa and efforts to promote regional stability. FM Abdelatty expressed to Cong Egypt’s readiness to work closely with the UN envoy to strengthen peace and security across the region. He also underscored the importance of continued international support for Somalia in its fight against armed groups and in building state institutions. The foreign minister called for urgent action to address the funding shortfall facing the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), stressing that the mission plays a key role in countering terrorism and enhancing security in the Red Sea corridor. He said preparations were under way for the deployment of Egyptian troops to AUSSOM, in line with Cairo’s broader commitment to regional stability and counterterrorism efforts. On wider regional dynamics, FM Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s rejection of any “destabilizing policies” in the Horn of Africa and voiced support for international initiatives aimed at de-escalation and restoring peace.
