The man accused of assassinating Charlie Kirk has been seen in bodycam footage speaking with Utah police after a car crash, years before he allegedly murdered the conservative activist.
Tyler Robinson, 22, is facing a capital murder charge in the shooting of Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, who was gunned down last week in Utah.
In a new video obtained by Scripps News, Robinson appears collected, cooperative and even polite as he explains to an officer how his Audi collided with another vehicle at a intersection in 2022.
‘(The other driver) would’ve been there going left, and as I was coming through, he turned in, and I T-boned into the side of him,’ Robinson can be heard explaining.
In the video, Robinson tells officers he had just put oil in his vehicle before leaving the house.
‘Just as I left the house, I put oil in it. Just topped it off,’ he explains.
Robinson is joined by his younger brother, who appears briefly, and tells cops their mother is on her way with insurance information. She arrives shortly after to provide documents to police.
No one was injured in the crash that saw Robinson’s Audi collide, who was 19 at the time, with a Ford sedan. No citations were issued.
Nothing about the footage suggests that the man speaking so matter-of-factly would one day be at the center of a national manhunt and a potential death penalty case.
Earlier this week he appeared in court in an anti-suicide vest and is facing seven counts, including a capital murder charge, over the killing of Kirk.
Court filings revealed he had threatened to kill himself in the hours before his arrest, his parents said they were able to convince him to meet them.
During that discussion, Robinson is said to have implied he was the shooter and said he didn’t want to go to jail so wished instead to take his own life.
When asked why he did it, he is alleged to have told his parents that ‘there is too much evil and the guy spread too much hate’.
The Robinson family, aided by a minister, manage to coax their son into handing himself over to police in Washington County.
Prosecutors in Utah announced that they intend to seek the death penalty for Robinson.
Kirk’s killing prompted a full-scale political response. President Donald Trump ordered flags flown at half-staff in his honor while Vice President JD Vance personally traveled to Utah to retrieve Kirk’s body.
Kirks mourning also quickly turned to political retaliation. Dozens of reports have emerged of people being fired, suspended, or doxxed after making social media posts that mocked or downplayed Kirk’s death.
The backlash reached Hollywood this week, when ABC abruptly suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! following comments by the late-night host that critics said disrespected Kirk’s memory.
The suspension came after conservatives warned networks they could face federal license reviews if they failed to ‘take a stand.
