Minister for Adi Dravidar Welfare M. Mathiventhan, on Saturday (September 20, 2025) said that a target was fixed to provide education loans to the tune of ₹50 crore to 2,000 students in Namakkal district.
On Saturday, the Namakkal district administration, along with the lead banks, conducted an educational loan mela at a private engineering college at Ernapuram. In the mela, the Minister distributed educational loans to 161 students to the tune of ₹14.23 crore.
A total of six banks provided these loans: Canara Bank, which provided ₹8.11 crore to 49 students; State Bank of India – ₹3.89 crore to 54 students; Indian Bank – ₹1.40 crore to 38 students; Indian Overseas Bank – ₹73 lakh to 16 students; Bank of India – ₹7 lakh to a student; and Salem District Central Cooperative Bank – ₹3 lakh to three students.
Speaking at the function, the Minister said that the Tamil Nadu government fixed a target to provide education loans to the students in Namakkal. To achieve this target, the lead bank is organising all banks and conducting special education loan mela camps at the village panchayat and taluk level from August this year.
Based on the training given to all the E-Seva centres, workers at the Rasipuram Taluk level have helped to apply for an education loan through the Vidyalakshmi portal. On August 30, education loan applications are received from students and uploaded on the portal. Through that, on Saturday, loans were distributed to the students, the Minister added.
Stating that arrangements are made for students who have yet to apply on the portal, the Minister said that students are explained about the benefits provided while repaying the loans at the stipulated time. If loans are not repaid at the correct time, it will affect the CIBIL score, and in the future, it will further affect getting loans, the Minister added.
In the function, District Collector Durgamoorthi, Rajya Sabha member KRN. Rajeshkumar, Namakkal MP V.S. Matheswaran, MLA P. Ramalingam and officials participated.
