Education minister rejects bulletproof jacket in protest for safe learning environment for students

Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has rejected the use of a bulletproof jacket during his working visit to the Upper East Region, insisting that academic institutions must remain safe and peaceful environments free from heavy security presence.

During his tour of some Senior High Schools in the region, the Minister revealed that he was offered a bulletproof jacket by security officials before beginning his visit at Zebilla Senior High School in the Bawku enclave, but he declined.

“When I arrived at the home of the Regional Minister, I knew what I was about to say would send ripples somewhere. I was given a bulletproof jacket to wear,” he said.

According to Mr. Iddrisu, schools should not be associated with such measures, as the presence of bulletproof vests and armed security officers creates an unconducive atmosphere for learning.

“I declined to wear it not because I don’t value my life—I do. But I also value yours. More importantly, I wanted to send a signal that bulletproof jackets do not belong in an academic environment. They don’t. Today, tomorrow, and forever, we should not encourage even the mere presence of police and military in learning spaces. It does not provide the conducive atmosphere you need to thrive in your studies. And besides, if I wore one, you all would have asked—where is mine?” he added.

The Minister also encouraged students preparing for the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) to remain calm, confident, and focused.

“I’m here this morning to encourage you as you approach the last stretch of the WASSCE. Today, as I understand, you will be writing General Science. I wish you good luck and every success. Exams are only a test of what you have learned over time, so approach them with confidence. You will pass,” he said.

As part of his visit, the Minister toured Zebilla Senior High School, Bolgatanga Technical Institute, and Zamse Senior High Technical School, where he interacted with students and school authorities.
