Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has emphasized the importance of discipline in schools, urging teachers not to compromise when it comes to instilling discipline in students.
Speaking at the Bolgatanga Technical Institute during a working visit to some Senior High Schools in the Upper East Region, Mr. Iddrisu stressed that discipline is crucial for creating a conducive learning environment.
“So I urge you teachers, don’t be compromising when it comes to discipline. You have the full support of the state and, by extension, I can say, as I have said publicly, President Mahama and his ministers will not interfere in the management of your institutions. They have faith and confidence in you and in your leadership. So don’t let us down,” he said.
The Education Minister called on teachers and school authorities to enforce disciplinary codes without hesitation. According to him, the government will support the Ghana Education Service (GES) in implementing the necessary reforms to curb violent behavior and instill discipline in schools.
“We have a responsibility to provide a structured, focused, safe, and secure environment conducive to learning. But when discipline breaks down, every other thing falls apart,” he noted.
Mr. Iddrisu further stressed that discipline is central to character formation.
“It is at the heart and the hallmark of character building, which is part of our responsibility. The focus of learning is not just about literacy and numeracy; it’s about character building. And therefore, if at this age we cannot instill the values of discipline, then we will not be able to prepare them well for their future career paths,” he said.
The Minister’s call for stricter discipline comes amid rising incidents of indiscipline in schools, including violent behavior and examination malpractice.
He also revealed that the government is working tirelessly to end the double-track system in Senior High Schools across the country, considering its negative impact on effective teaching and learning.
