It's officially the season for spider breeding, which means you're probably noticing an increase in these eight-legged creatures around your home. From September to October, male spiders are on the hunt for female partners, often encroaching on our living spaces in the process. While spiders play a beneficial role in the environment by keeping other pests in check, it's understandable if you'd rather not share your living space with them. According to Sam Jenkinson, a building expert at Tiger's Garden, there's a simple adjustment you can make that will deter spiders from entering your home. If you have a fireplace, you might want to reconsider where you store your firewood. Spiders are drawn to firewood for various reasons - it provides shelter, a place to spin webs and lay eggs, and attracts other insects which serve as a food source. So, it's best to store your firewood somewhere you'd prefer not to encounter a spider. Another effective method is to create your own spider-repelling spray. Spiders aren't fans of peppermint, citrus, or vinegar scents, reports the Express . To keep spiders at bay, combine 10-15 drops of peppermint or citrus essential oil with water in a spray bottle. Spritz this mixture around your home, focusing particularly on windowsills, doorways, and other potential entry points for spiders. You could also try rubbing citrus peels or placing vinegar-soaked cotton balls around your home for a similar effect. Another effective method is to plant strongly scented flowers around your garden and in pots within your home to further deter spiders. There are several plants that spiders aren't fond of, including peppermint, lavender, basil, and citronella. Plant these around your garden to keep spiders away from both your garden buildings and the home itself.
