It has been five long months since EastEnders icon Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) last graced our screens, but the date of her return has finally been confirmed.

The soap legend waltzes back into Walford next Monday, but has an almighty shock waiting for her upon her arrival.

That’s because, in the months since leaving for Australia to support her grieving friend Michelle Fowler (Jenna Russell), Sharon’s old foe Zoe Slater (Michelle Ryan) is back on the Square after 20 years.

As long-standing EastEnders fans will remember, Sharon and Zoe share quite a history, as during her original stint in Walford, Zoe had an affair with Sharon’s father Den Watts (Leslie Grantham) while she was dating Sharon’s adoptive brother Dennis Rickman (Nigel Harman).

Then, of course, Zoe was later involved in a fateful night in The Queen Vic, which saw Den’s wife Chrissie Watts (Tracy-Ann Oberman) murder him and lead Zoe to believe she was the one who’d dealt the fatal blow.

Needles to say that when Sharon arrives home next week, she’s furious to catch sight of Zoe outside No.31.

While her siblings Vicki Fowler (Alice Haig) and Zack Hudson (James Farrar) lay on a welcome, she remains fixated on Zoe and goes to confront her. But to everyone’s surprise, she calls a truce with her in The Vic.

However, this is Walford after all, so you can bet that peace will not last…

‘It’s explosive when Sharon arrives and finds out that Zoe is back in the Square,’ says Alice Haig, who plays Vicki, warning of ‘unfinished business’ between Vicki, Sharon and Zoe.

‘It wasn’t just the affair with Den, it was also that he convinced Zoe to lie about being pregnant by Dennis, and then there’s the murder. It’s as if a whole nightmare has now resurfaced,’ she explains.

‘There are lots of twists and turns to come, but it’s safe to say that they are both very, very angry with Zoe. However, there are moments when Sharon and Vicki want to be on the same page, but don’t quite succeed…’

After Vicki has another fight with Zoe in the Square, Zack tries to break things up but gets hit in the process – and when Sharon learns of the altercation, she rushes off to have it out with Zoe.

During their showdown, Zoe then lets slip a shocking admission and a disbelieving Sharon loses her temper, causing Zoe’s mum Kat Moon (Jessie Wallace) to throw her out of The Vic.

While viewers will have to wait and see Zoe’s bombshell reveals, they will be left wondering if it has anything to do with a popular fan theory about Den and the paternity of her twins…

EastEnders airs these scenes from Monday 22 September at 7.30pm on BBC One or stream first from 6am on iPlayer.
