The Philadelphia Eagles have the rarest of commodities in second year cornerback Quinyon Mitchell — a legitimate shutdown cornerback.
With Mitchell on the field, one side of the field is essentially shut down for any game the Eagles play in, with few exceptions, and he was one of the best players on last year’s Super Bowl winning team as a rookie.
The problem — if there can be problems when you’re off to a 4-0 start — is the opposite outside cornerback spot opposite Mitchell.
Once again, an opposing quarterback went away from Mitchell and lit up the scoreboard, this time with Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield throwing for 289 yards and 2 touchdowns before coming up short in a 31-23 Week 4 loss.
Were it not for a dumb interception by Mayfield in the fourth quarter, the Eagles may have very well lost the game. The bigger picture is the trio of Kelee Ringo, Jakorian Bennett and Adoree Jackson, who was on the inactives report against the Buccaneers, just isn’t getting the job done.
That’s why the Eagles, with general manager Howie Roseman’s war chest of draft picks, should make a big move to trade for a legitimate CB2 option opposite Mitchell.
Titans Seem Headed Toward Fire Sale
The Tennessee Titans, were worst team in the NFL one year ago and, after an 0-4 start, look like the worst team in the NFL once again this year..
They’re bad enough that head coach Brian Callahan is already having to deny the team is in the midst of an early season fire sale after trading starting cornerback Jarvis Brownlee to the New York Jets.
“I don’t think so,” Callahan told ESPN’s Turron Davenport on September 24. “That was a one-off situation unique to what it was. There’s front offices around the league from now until the deadline that call everybody in football, and they are all looking for different things. So I can’t say whether or not there’ll be something more or nothing more. It’s hard for me to make any predictions about that or stake any statements about it.”
That could only lead us to believe that the fire sale is happening and, in that case, the Titans might be willing to deal starting cornerback L’Jarius Sneed for the right price.
Sneed would be an incredible pickup for the Eagles, who might be able to get him in exchange for a third round pick, straight up.
He would also fit into the culture the Eagles already have established. Sneed was a full time starter on back-to-back Super Bowl winning teams for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2022 and 2023 and signed a 4-year, $76.4 million free agent contract with the Titans before the 2024 season.
Mitchell Has Been Star From Day 1 With Eagles
The Eagles selected Mitchell in the first round (No. 21 overall) out of Toledo in the 2024 NFL draft.
After helping lead the Eagles to a Super Bowl win, Mitchell landed at No. 9 on ESPN’s annual Top 10 position rankings — at 23 years old he was the youngest player to make the list.
