The Eastern Cape Department of Traditional Affairs says they are pulling all stops to ensure there is no loss of life, during the upcoming summer initiation season in the province. The department says it will train over 400 traditional surgeons and assistants across the province, as part of efforts towards restoring the dignity of this well-respected rite of passage in Xhosa culture. Over the years this practice has been marred by deaths of boys while undergoing the journey to manhood. Traditional Affairs MEC Zolile Williams says the aim is to ensure that traditional surgeons and assistance stick to basics and preventing amputations and loss of lives. “We would want to see a proper traditional circumcision that brings pride to the tradition and we believe that working together with traditional leaders we because we were together in all these programs, so we are collaboration to ensure that the tradition is successful in the eastern cape we are pushing hard for zero deaths.” Initiation Season | It’s embarrassing to keep complaining about death of initiates: Contralesa
