DVLA to upgrade international travel documents for global standardization

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) of Ghana has revealed plans to enhance its international travel documents to improve their global acceptance and ensure compliance with international standards.

A statement posted on the official Facebook page of DVLA’s Chief Executive Officer, Julius Neequaye Kotey, outlined that the upcoming upgrade aims to address the occasional rejection of Ghanaian International Driver’s Licences (IDLs) and International Vehicle Permits (IVPs) by certain foreign countries.

As part of the initiative, the DVLA will introduce Biometric International Driver’s Licences and Biometric International Vehicle Permits. These new documents will feature a bio-data page designed to fully adhere to the specifications set by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO).

The DVLA explained that this upgrade is a key step in developing a modern, secure, and internationally verifiable system for Ghanaian drivers and vehicles traveling abroad.

The issuance of the upgraded biometric documents is expected to begin in 2026 at all DVLA stations across the country.
