Travelers from coast to coast are scrambling at airports as more flights get canceled due to the government shutdown. Major airlines are scaling back flight routes, and Detroit Metro Airport is one of many affected. The Federal Aviation Administration ordered the reductions to maintain travel safety. Forty airports, including Detroit Metro, were selected for the slowdown. FlightAware reported more than 30 canceled flights at Detroit Metro on Friday. “It would be a headache if we’re going to be late, even just a little bit,” said Erin Marsh, a traveler heading to Japan. Travelers across the country anxiously wait to see if their next flights will take off. “It’s just that little pit in your stomach of like what would I have to pay? When would I be able to leave? Do I need to reorganize all the meetings? I mean I suppose in the grand scheme of things it’s not the worst thing in the world, but it definitely leaves you a little frustrated and unsettled,” said Sonia Vora, who’s visiting family in Detroit. The FAA’s flight cuts affect airports across more than two dozen states. Erica Bodsole, who’s visiting friends in Detroit, said, “I would hope we can resolve this issue soon. I’m also concerned about flying for Thanksgiving because we already have plane tickets for that.” While many travelers at Detroit Metro say it’s been smooth sailing so far, others have faced cancellations. Viewers on Facebook shared their struggles with canceled flights. Detroit Metro addressed the scale back in a statement, saying in part, “We appreciate our customers’ patience as the airport authority, airlines and federal partners adapt to changing conditions.” “I get it, like I get why people who aren’t getting paid and working six to seven days a week are saying I don’t want to work anymore,” said Sonia Vora. “I get that.” With all the uncertainty, Detroit Metro Airport released tips for travelers. They encourage everyone to download their airline’s app and turn on notifications. Travelers should also make sure their airline has updated contact information. And lastly, pack your patience. Detroit Metro Airport is one of Delta Airlines’ largest and most important hubs. The airline said it will give customers as much notice as possible about any changes to their flights and apologized for any inconvenience these adjustments may cause.
