Drug dog visiting middle school finds cocaine in teacher’s wallet, police say

EAST BATON ROUGE PARISH, La. (WAFB/Gray News) – A teacher was arrested at a middle school in Baton Rouge after she was allegedly caught with cocaine during a random drug search Tuesday.
A drug dog was at Westdale Middle School when Virginia Somers, 47, was reportedly found with cocaine inside of a wallet. The drugs were tested and confirmed to be cocaine, sources said.
Officials said that Somers told them that the cocaine belonged to a friend who gave it to her at the LSU football tailgate Saturday.
When searching Somers’ car, officials reportedly found marijuana and pipes.
Somers now faces possession charges for drugs and paraphernalia.
Somers teaches Math Intervention at Westdale Middle School and has been teaching for more than a decade, officials said.
In a statement, the East Baton Rouge Parish Public School System said, “this behavior is not condoned by our district and we remain committed to maintaining a safe, secure, and drug-free environment for all students and staff.”
The district said the matter is being handled in accordance with its policy and procedures.
