Drivers struggling with 'blinding' headlights at night say £9 glasses 'really help'

Amazon has reduced a pair of 'anti-glare' specs that motorists claim have made night-time driving 'easier and safer'. Nearly half of Brits confess they find it challenging to drive after dark due to 'blinding' headlights from approaching vehicles. After research conducted last winter by the Department for Transport (DfT) concerning headlights 'dazzling' motorists, an announcement this month has disclosed that the government is preparing to initiate a fresh evaluation of the origins and solutions for brilliant LED vehicle lights. Responding to the development, Confused.com motor insurance expert Rhydian Jones mentioned that particular measures could help nighttime drivers - including glasses, reports the Mirror. "With news that the government is looking to do more to investigate the causes and remedies for bright LED car lights, drivers will be relieved to know road conditions might get better in the long term," he said. "As days have gotten shorter and darker, drivers around the UK may be feeling worried about struggling to see at night. "Our research found that nearly half (48%) of drivers often have difficulty seeing the road due to glare from oncoming headlights. And more than one in four (28%) have lost sight of the road due to other drivers' headlights. So, the government's assessment to reduce the impact of headlights will be welcomed by many." Offering guidance, he said: "But for now, if you are struggling with other cars' bright lights when driving, the best thing to do is to slow down and drive carefully. However, if it's the car behind you which is dazzling, adjusting your rear-view mirror could help reduce glare. It also helps to keep your windscreen free from dirt, as this often creates glare too. And if you wear glasses, lenses with an anti-reflective coating could make a difference." Kazimieras Urbonas, automotive specialist at European auto parts marketplace Ovoko, also commented on the headlight safety crisis affecting UK drivers. She said: "The government’s headlight review comes after receiving complaints from drivers being blinded by LED headlights. Around 250 accidents are annually linked to headlight glare, and 75% of drivers find night driving harder, making this review long overdue. "Compared to older halogen lamps, LED headlights produce whiter and more focused beams. Older drivers take nine seconds to recover from the glare, than one second for younger drivers. Illegal LED retrofits fail MOT tests and create dangerous glare for oncoming traffic, while SUVs and larger vehicles position lights higher off the ground, which escalates the safety risks for other road users." Amazon is selling a pair of Boolavard Night Sight Driving Over Glasses for £8.99. The online retailer claims: "The yellow lens can reduce glare, add contrast to your vision and increase visual clarity when you drive at night, dusk or rainy day. "Night vision glasses will balance the polarised and vision, which can cut the glare from the headlights and increase brightness. Ideal even for glasses wearers: you can leave your spectacles on and wear the Night Vision glasses on top comfortably." To date, the Boolavard Night Sight Driving Over Glasses boasts an average customer rating of 4.2 stars out of five from 8,677 reviews. Numerous customers find the night driving glasses 'effective' and 'comfortable', highlighting that they fit well over their existing glasses and make night driving 'safer' and 'easier'. They also value the glare reduction, with one customer saying they 'can see in the dark' and another saying they work well on sunny days. Customers also regard the glasses as 'good value for money' and commend their 'quality'. While Amazon isn't the only retailer offering similar glasses, with The Range selling Clip On Anti Glare Polarised Night Driving Glasses for £11.99, Argos offering JML PolaOptics Tortoise Polarised Sunglasses for £15, and Debenhams slashing the price of Rectangle Polarised FO4 Fit Over Glasses Night Driving Sunglasses from £65 to £22. Amazon's Boolavard Night Sight Driving Over Glasses are currently 10% off and have garnered thousands of reviews. One satisfied customer said: "A lifesaver at night whilst driving against these new bright headlines." Another praised them saying: "Brilliant. Excellent to drive at night. Much more confident now." A third wrote: "A must have for driving and good price." Another shared: "These night driving glasses are great. I bought them because I'm light-sensitive, and they really helped cut down glare from headlights and streetlights. They fit comfortably over my regular glasses, though I'll admit they do look a bit odd worn that way!" However, not all feedback was positive. One person noted: "Good glasses and they work. no container for glasses, though." Another complained: "Far too big. Keep falling down." A third was unimpressed, stating: "Look and feel cheap plastic - like something you buy in a £1 shop." A fourth added: "They just make everything look yellow and a little darker." The majority of reviews are indeed positive. One customer exclaimed: "What a difference these make, when driving at night, and when it is foggy, makes eye sight/view, so much clearer." Another added: "They do help with driving in the dark against being blinded by strong headlights." However, one user shared a "minor" issue, stating: "Bought these for the current wife who was complaining of night time glare when driving. These pop over her glasses and reduce glare well. Knocked off a star for fit, which she resolved with one of those drawstrings that clip on the arms and tighten across the back of your head."
