Driver killed in Oneida County crash identified

Lee, N.Y. — Deputies on Monday identified the man who died in a single-vehicle crash Sunday evening in Oneida County. The man was identified as Owen C. Smith, 19, of Lee Center, according to a news release from Robert Maciol, the Oneida County sheriff. The crash occurred at about 8:40 p.m. Sunday on Steadman Road in the town of Lee. Smith was driving south on Steadman Road at the time of the crash, Maciol said. He lost control of the vehicle and went off the eastern shoulder, then collided with a tree. Smith was taken to Rome Health Hospital in Rome, where he later died. Investigators have determined that speed appears to be the primary factor in the crash, Maciol said.
