Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake: How to get Erdrick's Armour (DQ1)

Erdrick’s Armour is the most powerful equipment in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake’s first adventure. In fact, I recommend getting it before you fight some of the later game bosses like Spiketail, due to its incredible defensive powers. You can pick it up virtually anytime you want, but I recommend being decently equipped before bothering to go after it, because the boss, the Knight-Errant, is no pushover. His attacks can be devastating, but if they become too much, you can reduce the difficulty down to Dracky Quest. Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake has a pretty brutal difficulty curve in both games, so don’t let it push you around too much when seeking the Erdrick’s Armour. If you want to know where and how to get it, we’re here to help.Erdrick’s Armour is found in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake’s Damdara (DQ1)You will find Erdrick’s Armour in DQ1 of Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake in the fallen village of Damdara. If you’ve been following the adventures of Zalen the Bard, he’ll show up in this village when you arrive, lamenting the loss of this once great town. He won’t tell you where to find the armour, but if you look to the east side of town, you’ll see a sparkle just beyond a puddle of poisonous swamp water. Here's where you can find Damdara in DQ1 (Image via Square Enix)Before you can claim it, the Knight-Errant will appear, and you will need to defeat it before you can claim Erdrick’s Armour in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake. Before covering how to beat the boss, here’s what the Erdrick’s Armour does when equipped:Restores HP with every step takenPrevents damage from Swamp/Electrified tilesReduces damage from all spells and breath attacksBefore you can claim it though, you need to defeat the Knight-Errant. A deadly knight-type enemy, it can cast spells and drop some truly devastating melee strikes. However, with your own spells, and especially the Cop Out ability, you can make short work of him.How to beat Knight-Errant in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake (DQ)The Knight-Errant is a truly frustrating boss, one of the harder ones in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake, but it leads to the Erdrick’s Armour. One of the most important things you can do in this fight is keep the Fizzle spell on Knight-Errant at all times. He can put you to sleep, or reflect magic, so you want to prevent that from occurring. Here’s a list of what he can do:Here's where you begin the fated duel with the Knight-Errant (Image via Square Enix)Knight-Errant’s attacksMelee attack for ~80-125 damageDesperate Attack for ~180-200 damage.Bounce spell: Reflects all magicHelm Splitter skill: Deals damage and lowers your defensesSnooze spell: Can put the Hero to sleep for a few turnsYou can approach this fight in a few ways. One is to keep Fizzle on the Knight-Errant, and just use Cop Out. Cop Out has a high chance to deflect incoming physical attacks. It’s not a guarantee, but it has a pretty high chance of working.Conversely, you can still keep Fizzle on the Knight-Errant, and go with the Wild Side/Muster Strength strategy. This triggers Wild Side to double your attacks, Muster Strength to double your damage for the next attack, and then drop attacks like Falcon Slash or Miracle Slash (if you need HP).This is not the ideal situation; if Knight-Errant gets Bounce cast, you'll need to play defensively and hope he doesn't put you to sleep (Image via Square Enix)That way, you can just hack away at your opponent until he’s dead. However, you will occasionally need to cast Moreheal, because this is a very aggressive, hard-hitting boss. If you have ReHeal, it’s great in this fight to give you a bit of bonus health every turn. Personally, I prefer Wild Side+Muster Strength+Miracle Slash as the method of choice. This keeps your health mostly at a decent level, while you bash away at the Knight-Errant. With luck, he’ll keep trying to cast spells while muted, to give you free damage. There’s no real secret tricks; you just have to keep pounding away at him.If you drop into Yellow Health and have your Sigils, you can enhance your Wild Side into Duplicate by holding the appropriate button. That will give you three attacks instead of two, and does an even higher amount of damage. The downside is that you put yourself at risk, so I highly recommend Miracle Slash to get that life back. Just take your time and take this boss out to claim the best armor in the first adventure of Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake: Erdrick's Armour.Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake combines the first two classic games in the franchise in one location. Featuring gorgeous HD-2D visuals, they also feature a wealth of quality-of-life features and upgrades, similarly to the DQ3 Remake. You can learn more about this release in our in-depth review.
