The Dragonlord is the final foe of Dragon Quest 1 & 2’s DQ1 portion of the release. A dreadful, two-phase fight, it’s just as challenging as it was on the NES/Famicom, if not moreso. Once you’ve formed the Rainbow Drop, and made your way into Charlock Castle, home of the Dragonlord, you’ll have to fight your way through hordes of the strongest monsters in the game, only to be met by the final boss. While this fight can be difficult, you’re also able to play on the Dracky Quest difficulty, and turn on invincibility if it becomes too tough; no judgment here, this fight is rough. Thankfully, there are some tricks and things you can take advantage of in the Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD -2D Remake Dragonlord fight. Here’s everything you need to know. How to defeat the Dragonlord in DQ1 of Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake (Phase 1)The Dragonlord is DQ1’s final boss in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake, and it's broken into two parts. The first part is just The Dragonlord in his humanoid form. It’s a long, tough battle, and unfortunately, the game doesn’t give you his HP. I recommend being around level 45, so you will have the agility to go first in this fight, in all likelihood. The Dragonlord can be a fierce foe, but just be safe and patient, and you'll overcome him (Image via Square Enix)Just keep an eye for his health to turn Yellow, and then Red, because those are the markers that he’s closer to defeat. Make sure you bring a few MP restoring items to this fight, and perhaps an Oomph Powder or two if you have them. Below is every attack we saw him do in this fight. The Dragonlord’s attacks (Phase 1)Melee attack for around 60-70 dmgMoreheal Spell: 170-180 healthSpooky Aura: Reduces your Magic ResistanceAssess the Situation: Does nothingSnooze: Sleep spellEnhances Magical Power: Magic spells will temporarily hit much harderKasizz: 50-60 dmgBounce: Reflects spells back at youRipple of Disruptive Energy (When in red health): Cancels all buffsThe Dragonlord will almost always use two attacks a round in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake, even if sometimes, it’s just “Assesses the Situation”. If you have items like Fairy Foil (Sword), I recommend using it at the start of the fight, for the defense boost it grants. As a Dragon-type enemy, he’s weak to a few things. The Dragonlord is weak to the Zap line of spells, Lightning Slash, and Dragon Slash. While your physical attacks deal decent damage, you’re probably better off using Erdrick’s Sword as an item for its spell cast damage in this Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake fight. If you fail to Fizzle the Dragonlord, he may cast Bounce. Do not cast at him then! (Image via Square Enix)However, another important weakness of the Dragonlord in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake is that the Dragonlord can be hit with the Fizzle spell. This means you can temporarily stop him from casting spells. It’s not a guaranteed hit, but I do recommend using it on him. To keep your health topped off, the Reheal spell is great, but your most powerful tool in this round is probably going to be the Wild Side scroll. It lets you act twice, and so if you combine it with Muster Strength and Dragon Slash, you can deal 500 or so damage in one blow. If you get down into Yellow Health, you can do something much better.Activate Wild Side, then use your Sigil (hold Square) to charge Wild Side into Duplicate. This will give you six attacks in one turn, so use Dragon Slash or Miracle Slash (if you need health back) for a massive amount of damage. Phase 1 is just about playing it safe, and whittling away his health. After you defeat the Dragonlord in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake, he reveals his True Form. How to defeat the Dragonlord in DQ1 of Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake (Phase 2)When the Dragonlord reveals his true form in Dragon Quest 1& 2 HD-2D Remake, this DQ1 boss shows his true power. With a full heal, and a suite of new and familiar attacks, this is going to be the hardest boss in the normal playthrough. You can see his full list of potential attacks below.Dragonlord’s True Form attacksMelee attack for 90+ damageOomph spell: Increases attack significantlyAcceleratle spell: Increases AgilityBuff spell: Increases DefenseMoreheal spell: Heals for about 160-170Bite with enormous fangs: 170-180 damageInferno breath: 40-60 damageKasizz spell: 40-60 damageKafrizz spell: 60-100 damageScorch breath: 90-100 damageShouts Suddenly: Temporary FearIf you see a buff get cast, immediately get ready for Cop Out to deflect those incoming strikes (Image via Square Enix)The Dragonlord also attacks twice a round in almost all cases in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake. Occasionally, you will only see one attack. Most of the Dragonlord’s attacks feel incredibly random, but there is a pattern you can take advantage of every single time you fight this boss.If you ever see the Dragonlord cast a buff spell (Oomph, Acceleratle, Buff), immediately use the Cop Out Ability. The reason for this is, he will spend the next turn doubling up on the Bite with enormous fangs move, and it hurts so much; even worse if he uses Oomph.Cop Out gives you a very good chance of deflecting the attack back at the boss. This gives you around 300 free damage on the boss if you deflect both. Then, the following two or so rounds, the boss will always use a melee attack and a spell. You can still use Cop Out to deflect the next few melee attacks.Hitting the boss with 6 Miracle Slashes like this is a great way to get health back if needed (Image via Square Enix)While the Dragonlord will still use the Bite outside of these times, it’s rarer, and at least this way, you can predict it. I recommend keeping Wild Side on at all times, and when you can safely dip into Yellow Health, trigger Divide as well to get huge Dragon Slash/Miracle Slash damage combos out. If you have an Oomph Powder on, you can get around 1200 damage out in one blast of Wild Side + Divide. You just have to be patient, activate Healmore and Reheal when you can, and try to keep Wild Side on at all times. For this reason, I recommend leaving a Sage’s Elixir in your inventory, in case you start to run out of MP. Once the boss finally drops, enjoy the ending!Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake combines the first two classic games in the franchise in one location. Featuring gorgeous HD-2D visuals, they also feature a wealth of quality-of-life features and upgrades, similarly to the DQ3 Remake. You can learn more about this release in our in-depth review.
