Spiketail is one of DQ1’s bosses in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake, and it stands out as one of the most annoying fights in the game. This was the first boss fight I genuinely wanted to lower the difficulty of, because it felt so punishing. Even if I had plenty of health and great gear, it was hard to overcome this boss, especially when it summoned subordinates to help it do battle. That isn’t to say that it’s impossible to beat. Spiketail can be influenced by at least one status ailment, and has plenty of weaknesses to exploit in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake. If you’re struggling through this boss, we’re here to help you get through it.Tips to defeat Spiketail boss in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake’s DQ1 sectionSpiketail is such an interesting, challenging boss fight in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake. It’s one of the several boss fights where you likely won’t fight the enemy alone; they can summon allies to help them fight. Interestingly enough though, if you’re playing on Dracky Quest difficulty, Spiketail does not summon adds to the fight.Spiketail can summon friends, but with Wild Side, you can take them both out in one turn before they get out of hand (Image via Square Enix)It’s a very challenging fight, and while, for the most part, he only uses one action per round, the amount of damage he can crank out is devastating. I recommend going into this fight with the Insulatle spell (reduce breath damage attacks), Erdrick’s Armour (Knight-Errant in Damara), and the Fairy Foil weapon to reduce incoming damage a bit more.Spiketail’s attacksMelee attack for 40-60 damageKabuff Spell: Increases defense slightlyAcceleratle Spell: Increases agility slightlyShout: Temporarily frozen with fearFreezing Blizzard breath: 80-110 damageAssess the situation: Does nothingInferno breath: 80-100 damageMultiheal: 80-90 heals to all alliesCalls for Backup: Summons two Dragonfly enemiesThe Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D boss Spiketail is fought in Kol, and while it is a hard-hitting, aggressive boss, it is susceptible to the Snooze spell. You can pop this off and hopefully, you’ll get lucky and have a few turns of uninterrupted damage.Spiketail is also weak to the Dragon Slash and Gust Slash abilities. All of the attacks the Spiketail boss will use in this fight are done once per round, with the exception of:InfernoFreezing BlizzardCalls for BackupThose will all happen twice in one round, so be prepared for a sudden deluge of damage. That’s why I highly recommend waiting until you have the Insulatle spell (unlocked at level 34). The Wild Side skill comes in great handy here for getting extra damage on the board, or hitting a Dragonfly with Dragon Slash (so the second Dragon Slash kills the other Dragonfly).Insulatle and Erdrick's Armour can make this fight far less tedious (Image via Square Enix)Unfortunately, there’s not a lot of rhyme or reason to his attacks, so you just have to be prepared for anything. It tends to open up with Multiheal, so on the first turn, I’d drop buffs instead of attacking. If you can safely get into yellow health without being at risk, use Wild Side, hold it down for Divide, and then hit a Dragon Slash to deal anywhere from 900-1200 damage to this boss in one go. It’s even better with Oomph Powder.Having Wild Side on at all times is great so you can double Healmore, double Snooze, or just Double Dragon Slash. If you have enough MP leftover in this combo, you can hold down Dragon Slash as well for its enhanced version, to just smash through Spiketail in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake. Once he’s been bested, you’ll have brought peace to Kol, and closure to one of its families.Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake combines the first two classic games in the franchise in one location. Featuring gorgeous HD-2D visuals, they also feature a wealth of quality-of-life features and upgrades, similarly to the DQ3 Remake. You can learn more about this release in our in-depth review.
