Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake: How to beat Belial (DQ2)

Belial is one of the main bosses of Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake’s DQ2 section, and the one you fight the most. He joins Atlas and Pazuzu as the big three lieutenants that were summoned to obey High Priest Hargon, from the darkness beyond this world. Belial is a blend of powerful melee strikes, and incredible magic, making him truly the most ferocious of the three lieutenants. You will fight him a few times, but the battle is more or less the same every time. That doesn’t mean he packs anything you can’t deal with. If you were diligent picking up scrolls, and have the power of Ripple of Disruption in particular, you can really put a stop to his high-damage spell shenanigans. If you’re struggling with Belial in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake, here’s what you need to know.Tips to defeat Belial in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D RemakePerhaps the most frustrating thing about Belial in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake is that he will occasionally just take three actions a turn. He can then take the time to buff himself with the Buff spell, Focus his magic, and also cast a spell like Kaboom all in the same round. It can feel overwhelming, but if you fought the Sea Lords, you have Ripple of Disruption, making that Caradoc’s number one priority. Here’s all the attacks Belial can hit you with.Don't let Belial keep any buffs if you can help it. A long fight just becomes longer (Image via Square Enix)Belial’s attacks in DQ2Buff spell: Significantly increases defenses.Kaboom spell: Deals ~90-120 explosion damage.Focuses as hard as he can: Significantly increases magical damage for a few turns.Magic Barrier spell: Increases magic resistance for a few turns.Inferno: Breath weapon that deals 60-100 damage.Melee attack: Hits for ~90-100 damageDesperate Attack: Hits for ~220 damage.Moreheal spell: Heals himself for around 160 health.Big Banga: Hits everyone for an average of 260 damage (Yellow Health or lower)One fairly predictable thing about the Belial fight in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake, is that when you use Ripple of Disruption, he tends to almost immediately cast Buff again, making it harder to deal physical damage. That’s why you just keep doing it every turn, unless you must heal.Thankfully, he’s also susceptible to Rib Tickler and Puff Puff, so make sure to put these to use again, like you did against Atlas and Pazuzu. I used Hero for all my damage, supplemented by Muster Strength and Oomph. Big Banga hurts SO much (Image via Square Enix)What really makes Belial dangerous though is when he gets to Yellow Health. He’ll start doing three actions more often, including the devastating Big Banga followed by two Infernos. It’s a good idea to give the Hero the Staff of Resurrection, because he’s likely the only one that’s going to survive, thanks to the Erdrick equipment.Sometimes, this is simply going to wipe your party, and there’s not a lot that can be done about it. If you don’t have Magic Barrier and Insulatle up, this is going to almost certainly kill three members of the party. I found that Rib Tickler and Puff Puff stopped working as well post Yellow Health, so I transitioned Matilda to healing with skills, and keeping buffs up, and Peronel focused on healing and buffing the Hero. Here were my actions used:Three actions in a row can be devastating (Image via Square Enix)Hero: Muster Strength, Demon DemeanorCaradoc: Ripple of Disruption, Omniheal, KabuffMatilda: Rib Tickler, Insulatle, AOE heal abilities/spellsPeronel: Oomph, Puff Puff, Magic Barrier, healing abilities/spellsJust stay vigilant and let the Hero do the work. Spells aren’t really that effective against Beilial in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake, so your Hero is going to be dealing the totality of the damage. Just keep the party topped off, and don’t be afraid to use Kazing and Omniheal to bring people back/heal the party to full. Once you’ve overcome him, get ready, Hargon awaits.Check out our other Dragon Quest 1 & 2 guides and featuresDragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake: How to beat HargonDragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake: How to beat MalrothDragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake: How to beat the Dragonlord (DQ1)
