DPP Warns MCP Against Stirring Tensions, Calls for Respect of Voters’ Will

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has cautioned the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to respect the will of Malawians and avoid making statements that could trigger instability as the nation awaits official election results.

Speaking during a press briefing in Lilongwe, DPP National Organising Secretary Sameer Suleman questioned MCP’s contradictory stance on election results.

“They are the ones telling Malawians to wait for MEC to announce official results, yet they are also claiming victory. Which one should Malawians believe? Respect the people,” Suleman said.

Former cabinet minister Ben Phiri also applauded Malawians for turning out in large numbers to vote, saying the ballot box has become the people’s true demonstration ground.

“Despite facing economic hardships, rising commodity prices and other challenges, Malawians did not take to the streets for protests. Instead, you waited for this moment to express yourselves through the ballot,” Phiri noted.

He further urged the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to expedite the announcement of results, citing delays and irregularities in the transmission of figures from Lilongwe Rural.
