The state Department of Transportation is developing plans to replace traffic signal controllers/cabinets and install cellular modems at select state-owned traffic signals across Connecticut, according to the agency.
The agency named the towns of Berlin, Bloomfield, Cheshire, Cromwell, Durham, East Hartford, Enfield, Glastonbury, Manchester, Meriden, Middletown, New Britain, Newington, Plainville, Rocky Hill, Somers, Southington, South Windsor, Tolland, Vernon, West Hartford and Windsor for this work.
“The purpose of this project is to upgrade the traffic signal controllers to the latest technology, as well as install cellular modems,” a DOT spokesperson said.
“By installing cellular modems, traffic signals that are close together can communicate with one other, as well as back to the CTDOT headquarters in Newington,” the spokesperson said.
“This allows CTDOT traffic engineers to adjust signal timings and perform system maintenance without needing to visit each site. This improves traffic flow, reduces delays, and increases overall roadway efficiency.”
The design plans for the project are expected to be completed in February 2026 with a tentative advertising date for construction of May 2026, according to the DOT.
