A newly sworn-in Court of Appeal judge and traditional ruler, Dormaahene Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II, has dismissed calls for a state of emergency to tackle Ghana’s illegal mining crisis, saying enforcement and responsible mining were better solutions.
Speaking to reporters after his swearing-in by President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday (2 October), Justice Agyeman Badu said declaring an emergency was unnecessary and could create gaps in resource exploitation.
“No, no, it has not come to that. Once you declare a state of emergency, you ask yourself who can do what. If we’re not able to get those resources, there will be a gap,” he said.
The Dormaahene urged traditional authorities to play a more active role in curbing galamsey, the local term for small-scale illegal mining, which has been blamed for polluting rivers and degrading land.
“I want to appeal to the chiefs, we the chiefs, we shouldn’t say we don’t have the power. In Dormaa, if you come there, I will arrest you and give you to the police so that you will be prosecuted,” he warned.
He cautioned that illegal miners were “destroying the environment and themselves,” stressing the need for strict law enforcement to deter offenders.
Illegal mining remains one of Ghana’s most pressing environmental challenges, threatening water supplies, farmland and communities across the country.
