Donald Trump’s Disapproval Rating Among Republicans is Now in Double Digits

U.S. President Donald Trump’s disapproval rating among Republicans is now in double digits, according to a new poll.
The survey by Quinnipiac University says 10 percent of registered Republicans disapprove of the President’s handling of his role, thought the vast majority, 86 percent, approve of his presidency.
This is the first time Republican disapproval of Trump has hit double digits in Quinnipiac polling.
Why It Matters
Approval ratings are useful in tracking the temperature of the nation and gauging the public’s response to the administration’s policies.
Republicans make up a key part of Trump’s base. Any significant dent in their support may embarrass the President and may cause problems for Republicans during the 2026 midterms.
What To Know
Trump’s popularity among Republicans has declined, according to Quinnipiac. Its previous poll in August showed 9 percent of Republicans disapproving of him. This was a 1 percent increase from July when 8 percent of GOP voters had an unfavorable view of the President.
The poll also shed light on Republicans’ opinions of other key administration figures. For example, 11 percent of Republicans also disapprove of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr, the poll found.
It also found that 10 percent disapprove of Kash Patel’s handling of the FBI directorship and 11 percent disapprove of U.S. Attorney General, Pam Bondi.
The poll also showed that generally, 38 percent of voters approve of the way Trump is handling his job as president while 54 percent disapprove, compared with 93 percent of Democrats who said they disapproved of him, and 3 percent who approved.
A recent Echelon Insights poll, conducted between September 18-22, showed that Trump’s disapproval rating had jumped from 51 percent to 53 percent since last month, while his approval rating was down two points to 45 percent. Overall, his net approval dropped by four points.
The latest YouGov/Economist poll put his latest approval rating at an all-time low, with 39 percent approving and 57 percent disapproving. The president’s numbers with the pollster last week was 41 percent with a 54 percent disapproval rating.
What People Are Saying
William F. Hall, an adjunct Professor of Political Science and business at Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri, previously told Newsweek: “It is my opinion, increasingly, in view of the extremely negative ratings experienced by a Republican led Administration, it does appear that, barring some highly unlikely unforeseen circumstances, the midterm elections will bring about a major shift in the makeup of the House of Representatives, with an overwhelming victory for Democratic House candidates. This view reflects the negative ratings held by a Republican led Administration, virtually in every significant category, related to political success, including the state of the economy, employment, inflation and especially lack of optimism being displayed by the vast number of Americans.”
What Happens Next
Trump’s approval rating will likely fluctuate as his presidency continues. Whether he loses enough support from Republicans to affect Republican candidates in the November 2026 midterms remains to be seen.
