Donald Trump urges European Union to impose 100 % tariffs on India over oil import from Russia

PTC News Desk: US President Donald Trump has urged the European Union to impose 100 per cent tariffs on India and China over oil purchase from Russia in order to pressurise Russian President to come to terms. The request was conveyed via a conference call to EU sanctions envoy David O’Sullivan and other EU officials while an EU delegation was in Washington for sanctions coordination talks. We’re ready to go, ready to go right now, but we’re only going to do this if our European partners step up with us, one US official said, signalling Washington’s push for a joint approach.Notably India and China are major oil buyers from Russia, a key lifeline for Moscow since its expanded Ukraine invasion in 2022. Trump has repeatedly, on multiple platforms threatened punitive tariffs on both the nations if they continue trade with Russia, and earlier this year, the US President raised the duties on India by 25 per cent points. This move would represent a major shift from the EU’s current approach, which has primarily relied on sanctions to isolate Russia instead of imposing tariffs. According to the Financial Times, European capitals are also considering possible secondary sanctions targeting countries like India and China, though their deep trade relations with both nations remain a significant concern.
