President Donald Trump said Tuesday he supports a salary cap in college sports, arguing that schools are spending too much to attract top recruits. Speaking on ESPN’s Pat McAfee Show, Trump said college programs now need “NFL-type payrolls” to compete and warned that “bad things are going to happen unless they figure this out.” He added that “colleges don’t make that much money” and suggested limits similar to those in professional leagues. The president also renewed his criticism of the NFL’s revised kickoff rule, calling it “so unromantic” and saying he hopes college football doesn’t follow suit. This is a breaking news story. Updates to follow.
