Donald Trump’s Swollen Ankles Go Viral: What His Kuala Lumpur Visit Reveals About His Health

Health concerns about US President Donald Trump have resurfaced after his severely swollen ankles were visible during a picture taken at the Malaysian summit. Trump is in Kuala Lumpur for a meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), which kicked off his six-day trip. A lot of pictures and videos captured at the ASEAN summit showed his ankles, which appeared to be extremely swollen. According to experts, it mostly happens due to chronic venous insufficiency, a condition that Trump announced earlier this year that he is suffering from. Chronic venous insufficiency occurs when the veins in the legs have trouble sending blood back to the heart, causing blood to pool and creating high pressure. This is most often caused by damaged or weakened valves in the veins and is characterized by symptoms like leg swelling, aching, and heaviness, which often improve with elevation. Risk factors include age, a history of deep vein thrombosis, and prolonged periods of sitting or standing. However, after Trump’s latest physical test, White House physician Sean P. Barbabella has declared that the president “remains in exceptional health, exhibiting strong cardiovascular, pulmonary, neurological, and physical performance.” Barbarella further stated that Trump’s “cardiac age…. was found to be approximately 14 years younger than his chronological age.” Growing concerns about Trump’s health There has been mounting speculation over the health of the 79-year-old President in recent months, including when photos of his severely swollen ankles at the FIFA Club World Cup surfaced in July. There was also much uproar after multiple marks or sores were witnessed on his right hand. What is chronic venous insufficiency?CVI happens due to damage to any of your leg veins. These include your: Deep veins which are large veins deep in your body that run through your muscles. Superficial veins, which are close to your skin’s surface. Perforating veins, which connect your deep and superficial veins. According to doctors, CVI may cause mild symptoms at first. But over time, this condition may interfere with your quality of life and lead to serious complications. Experts say venous disease in general is very common. Every year, around one in 50 adults with varicose veins go on to develop chronic venous insufficiency. Chronic venous insufficiency usually affects people over age 50, and the risk keeps shooting up the older you get. Overall, chronic venous insufficiency affects about 1 in 20 adults. Signs and symptoms of CVI A few signs and symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency include: Achy or tired legs Burning, tingling, or “pins and needles” sensation in your legs Cramping in your legs at night Discoloured skin Edema or swelling in your lower legs and ankles Flaking or itching skin on your legs or feet Full or heavy feeling in your legs Leathery-looking skin on your legs Ulcers Varicose veins Severe edema in your lower leg can cause scar tissue to develop. This scar tissue traps fluid in your tissues. Your calf may feel large and hard to the touch. When this happens, your skin is more vulnerable to persistent ulcers.
