Donald Trump’s Approval Rating is Underwater in 12 States He Won

President Donald Trump’s approval rating is underwater in 12 states he won in 2024, according to a Civiqs poll. According to the survey, more people disapprove than approve of the way Trump is handling his job as president in all seven swing states—Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin—as well as in Alaska, Florida, Iowa, Ohio and Texas. Newsweek has contacted the White House for comment via email. Why It Matters Trump easily carried Alaska, Florida, Iowa, Ohio and Texas in the 2024 election, and the seven swing states were crucial to his victory. But if support for Trump continues to decline in those states, it could have an effect on Republicans’ performance in next year’s midterm elections, which will determine the balance of power in Congress and Democrats’ ability to thwart Trump’s agenda in the second half of his term. What To Know According to the Civiqs poll conducted October 17, Trump’s net approval rating was -1 in Alaska, which he won by more than 13 percentage points in 2024. Trump’s net approval rating in Arizona, which he won by about 5.5 percentage points in 2024, was -10. In Florida, which he carried by more than 13 points in 2024, his net approval rating was -6. In Georgia, which Trump by just over 2 percentage points, his net approval rating was -8. His net approval rating in Iowa, a deep red state Trump carried by more than 13 percentage points, his net approval rating is -7. In Michigan, a state Trump won by 1.4 percentage points, his net approval rating is -12. In Nevada, which Trump won by just over 3 percentage points, his net approval rating was at -12. In North Carolina, which Trump also won by just over 3 percentage points, his net approval rating has dropped to -10. In Ohio, a state that trump won by over 11 percentage points, his approval rating is -5. Pennsylvania went for Trump by 1.8 percentage points in 2024, but his net approval rating in the state is -9. In Texas, which Trump won by about 13.6 percentage points, his net approval rating stands at -3. And in Wisconsin, where Trump won by less than one percentage point, his net approval rating is -10. What People Are Saying Costas Panagopoulos, a political-science professor at Northeastern University, told Newsweek that the "most likely explanation for deteriorating Trump approval in red states is the perception that Trump has not focused on the economy, voters' top concern in 2024. "Voters across the country, and even in states that voted for him in 2024, have noticed. Many clearly believe he has not delivered for them, especially on economic concerns that affect them daily. His policies, on tariffs, for example, have even made things worse for many voters by making products more expensive. And this is even before they feel the real impact of the Big Beautiful Bill. Clearly, many Trump supporters in red states feel betrayed." White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson previously told Newsweek: "President Trump is keeping his promises and Making America Great Again: whether it’s securing the border, securing historic investments in American manufacturing, taming Biden’s inflation crisis, or fighting against the Democrats’ radical demands of free health care for illegal aliens." What’s Next Trump's popularity is likely to continue to fluctuate ahead of the midterm elections, which will take place in November 2026.
