Don't invest in a Bering Strait boondoggle

Doug Mallouk is correct to state that a large cooperative project between Russia and the United States would do much to restore relations between these two countries (“A Bering Strait tunnel is the key to peace with Russia,” Oct. 27). Why not select a project that could help save the environment rather than destroy it? How about rebuilding war-torn Ukraine or Gaza? Building a rail tunnel across the Bering Strait would be an environmental disaster with no obvious economic benefit. Where is the connecting infrastructure at each terminus? What bulk cargo requiring rail transport would be exchanged? Russia’s economy is in tatters, and the United States hasn’t even been able to construct a high-speed rail project on the continent. This project would wind up being a boondoggle that would allow two dictators to hand out lucrative contracts to their oligarch supporters. — Eric Greene, Annapolis
