A gruesome injury on Monday may have ended wide receiver Tyreek Hill’s tenure with the Miami Dolphins.
Hill suffered a dislocated knee as well as several ligament tears Monday against the New York Jets. The injury to Hill ended his season and may have also ended his tenure with in Miami.
CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones reported Saturday that league sources are expecting the Dolphins to release Hill at the conclusion of the season. Hill can receive $11 million in guaranteed money for 2026 if he is on the roster on the third day of the league season.
“An outright release before the start of the 2026 league year was always on the table regardless of injury due to how Hill’s contract is structured,” Jones wrote. “Last offseason he signed a deal that was reported as a three-year extension worth $90 million. But the final year of the deal had a cap hit of nearly $52 million and mostly served to increase the average-annual-salary mark that is used as the most common metric for ranking player salaries.”
Jones also highlighted that while money is certainly an issue, Hill’s ability to pass a physical may be what ultimately leads Miami to make the decision to move on from the former Super Bowl Champion.
“League sources view it as next to impossible the Dolphins would guarantee such money when Hill won’t be able to pass a physical at that point, meaning Miami would release the receiver before any 2026 dollar becomes guaranteed,” he wrote.
Many have speculated that Hill may retire rather than rehabbing and returning from such a gruesome injury. That does not seem to be the case, as Hill has made it known he plans to return and continue to play when he is healthy.
