NAPOLEON, MI — One dog rescued from a fatal house fire in Napoleon has found a new home, while the second is expected to be available soon for adoption. A Beagle and a German Shepherd were found following the fire that killed their owners Sandra M. Miracle, 76, and her daughter Susan M. Miracle, 50, on Oct. 26. The Beagle, named Faith, was seen circling the remains of the house before Jackson County Animal Control captured her using a live trap, Shelter Director Lydia Sattler said. Faith showed no physical injuries but appeared to be traumatized by the incident, she said. Believing she would do better in a home, the shelter had adopted her to a family in Charlotte on Oct. 31. “Giving her a more stable environment where she’s one-on-one with humans, day and night, versus being in this place where she’s isolated from people and other animals,” Sattler said. The German Shepherd, named Princess, appeared to be OK after she was given oxygen at the scene, and is being treated at the shelter. She is taking medication to counteract any infection she had in her lungs from the smoke, Sattler said. Princess is expected to recover and will be available for adoption around Nov. 10. The dogs were adopted separately because they didn’t show any strong connection, despite having the same owners, Sattler said. Napoleon Township Police Chief Duaine Pittman previously said authorities exhausted every effort they could to reach a direct family member. Sattler was thankful for the family that took in Faith and hopes Princess will be adopted soon as well. “We find so many animals that are in need, and sometimes emergency care, and there’s not a lot of options,” Sattler said. “This is something we do on a daily basis for many different animals that have all different kinds of trauma. Our entire team is dedicated and focused on being there to make sure the animals in our community have everything that they need.”
