Smoking is dangerous for everyone. However, women may face more serious health problems compared to men. From fertility issues to heart disease, the effects of smoking on women's bodies can be long-lasting and severe. We spoke to Dr. Padma Srivastava, Senior Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, Motherhood Hospitals, Lullanagar, Pune to understand the ill effects of smoking on women. ,She says, "Many men and women tend to smoke for various reasons. Some might smoke due to peer pressure, some due to stress. Smoking invites many health problems, such as lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart disease, and stroke. Furthermore, women may suffer more from the effects of smoking when compared to men. This is because women’s bodies process tobacco differently, and hormonal factors can make them more vulnerable to its harmful effects by inducing fertility problems.",The Dangers Of Smoking ,So, it is a proven fact that smoking damages the blood vessels and reduces oxygen supply, increasing the chances of heart attacks and strokes. Over time, it weakens bones and increases the risk of osteoporosis. Even exposure to second-hand smoke can harm women and their families, especially children.,Not many know but your habit of smoking can hurt your fertility. Smoking affects reproductive health. Dr. Padma says, "It can lead to concerning signs such as irregular periods, reduced fertility, and early menopause. Women who smoke during pregnancy can also suffer from complications such as premature birth, low birth weight, and developmental issues in the babies. Smoking takes a toll on the quality of eggs, making it harder for women to conceive naturally. Hence, quitting smoking is important for women to be able to prevent fertility problems.",She also listed some tips to help people quit smoking. ,The expert says, "Women must opt for smoking cessation therapy. Set a quit date and make sure to get rid of cigarettes from your purse, bag, or even home. Replace the habit with healthy alternatives, such as chewing sugar-free gum or snacking on fruits that can be beneficial for you.",Seek support from family, friends, or quit-smoking programs. Stay active and drink plenty of water to be able to manage those cravings. ,The expert concludes by saying, "Smoking may provide temporary relief from stress, but it can have a lasting negative impact on your overall well-being."
