In Hinduism, death is viewed not as an end but as a transition. It signifies the soul leaving one body and moving towards another. The sacred ritual performed to ensure a smooth journey for the soul is ‘Antyeshti‘. After the body, composed of five elements, is cremated, the soul moves to the next world according to its karma. As stated in the Garuda Purana, even a minor mistake during this time can become a significant obstacle in the soul’s journey. The Garuda Purana provides a clear explanation for this tradition. The soul does not immediately leave the cremation site after the rites are completed. It remains near the cremation ground for some time, reflecting on its previous life and caring for its loved ones. During this period, the soul is in a delicate state, caught between this world and the next. Earthly bonds, memories, and love can draw the soul back like a powerful magnet. This attachment is the major chain that prevents the soul from progressing. When family members attending the funeral look back sorrowfully, it sends a wrong signal to the soul. The soul feels that its family is unable to let go and is mourning for it, which amplifies its pain. Unable to break this bond and move forward, the soul remains stuck. Therefore, by walking forward bravely without looking back, the family members send a silent message to the soul. They convey, without words, “We send you on your journey with love and peace. Continue your journey.” This is the final and most precious gift they offer to the soul. There is a psychological aspect to this tradition. When we lose someone we love, we become very emotional. During such times, we need to give a strong signal to our minds that it is over and that we must move on. Moving forward without looking back is the first step in this process. It greatly helps in accepting the reality and returning to normalcy. Moreover, cemeteries are often filled with negative energy and intense sadness. Lingering in such places when we are emotionally vulnerable and repeatedly looking back can negatively impact our mental health. This tradition is not a superstition but a significant responsibility. It is a wonderful practice that benefits both the living and the dead. Only by physically leaving them can they peacefully transition to another world spiritually.
