Do not impose unilateral tariffs, Xi tells Trump; welcomes TikTok deal

ET BureauUS President Donald Trump along with China’s President Xi Jinping

Chinese President Xi Jinping told US President Donald Trump that Washington should stop imposing unilateral tariffs but that it welcomes negotiations over TikTok, according to a Chinese state media summary of the leaders’ call on Friday. The official readout described the first call in three months between the two men as positive and constructive. But it left open a question about whether the two sides had reached an agreement over the fate of short-video app TikTok.”On TikTok, Xi said China’s position is clear: the Chinese government respects corporate will and welcomes companies to conduct business negotiations on the basis of market rules to reach a solution consistent with Chinese laws and regulations and a balance of interests,” according to the meeting summary in Xinhua. Later on, Trump said he would meet his Chinese counterpart at a regional summit at the end of October in South Korea and will visit China in the “early part of next year,” following a Friday phone call.In a Truth Social post, Trump also said the Chinese leader would come to the United States “at an appropriate time,” noting the leaders also made progress on “the approval of the TikTok Deal.”Live EventsNeither Trump nor a readout of the call from Chinese state media gave any details on what was discussed about TikTok. TikTok did not immediately respond to AP’s request for more details on the call or the framework deal. This is the second call with Xi since Trump returned to the White House and launched sky-high tariffs on China, triggering back-and-forth trade restrictions that strained ties between the world’s two largest economies.US Halts Arms Aid to TaiwanTrump has declined to approve a more than $400 million military aid package for Taiwan as he seeks a trade deal with China, according to a Washington Post report on Thursday. The shipment, including munitions and drones, was rejected in a decision this summer that may still be reversed, citing unnamed sources.Trump’s $15B suit against NYT thrown outA federal judge in Florida on Friday tossed President Donald Trump’s $15 billion defamation lawsuit against New York Times. The lawsuit named a book and an article written by Times reporters Russ Buettner and Susanne Craig that focuses on Trump’s finances and his pre-presidency starring role in TV’s “The Apprentice.”Trump said in the lawsuit that they “maliciously peddled the fact-free narrative” that TV producer Mark Burnett turned Trump into a celebrity—“even though at and prior to the time of publications defendants knew that Trump was already an enormous success in business.US wants control of Afghan Air Base again The United States seeks to regain control of Bagram air base in Afghanistan, President Donald Trump said on Thursday during a press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, but an Afghan official dismissed the need for any US presence. The historic Soviet-built airstrip was the main base for American forces following the attacks of September 11, 2001, until their 2021 withdrawal. “We’re trying to get it back,” Trump said citing what he called its strategic location near China. “We want that base back.” Kabul said it was not open to any such deal, however.
