Do not feed to pets: Several dog, cat foods recalled over bacteria risk

Certain dog and cat foods have been recalled after the companies discovered they could be contaminated with salmonella, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Salmonella bacteria can sicken animals eating the food and people handling the products, the FDA warns. Symptoms in people may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. In rare scenarios, salmonella can lead to more serious complications. Infected pets could experience lethargy, diarrhea or blood diarrhea, fever, vomiting, decreased appetite and abdominal pain. Two companies are involved in the voluntary recalls, Raw Bistro Pet Fare and Foodynamics. Raw Bistro Pet Fare recall Raw Bistro Pet Fare of Cannon Falls, Minnesota, is recalling two sizes of its frozen beef dog food. The recalled products are the “Raw Bistro Dog Fare Grass-Fed Beef Entrée, Frozen” in 3-pound bags (UPC 858833002247) and the “Raw Bistro Dog Fare Grass-Fed Beef Entrée, Bulk, Frozen” in 18-pound cases (UPC 858833002629). Both products carry the best-by date of Aug. 27, 2026. The frozen sealed packages were shipped to customers and select distributors in California, Colorado, Illinois and Minnesota between Sept. 1 and Sept. 17. The contamination was discovered after FDA testing of product samples. Foodynamics recall Foodynamics is recalling several varieties of its freeze-dried pet treats under the brands “Raw Dog Barkery,” “BellePepper Cats,” “Kanu Pets,” and “What’s In the Bowl.” The company shipped a total of eight product packages from Wisconsin via UPS to retailers in Wisconsin, New York and Florida. Specific recalled products are: “Raw Dog Barkery” (two 16-ounce packages with a March 5, 2025, use-by date). “What’s In The Bowl” (three packages—two 3-ounce and one 16-ounce—with a March 5, 2027, use-by date, sold in Delafield, Wisconsin). “BellePepper Cats” (two 3-ounce packaged plastic bags labeled “Freeze Dried Chicken Heart Slices” with a March 16, 2027, use-by date, sold in New York). Recalled products with Dec. 14, 2026, and Jan. 15, 2026, use-by dates may also have been included in retail samples. No illnesses in either people or pets have been reported in connection with either company’s recall. Health risks and owner instructions Recalled pet foods should be thrown out and not donated or sold. This way, children, pets and wildlife cannot have access to the products. Pet owners are also told by the FDA to wash food bowls, cups and storage containers. People should also wash their hands after handling recalled products along with any utensils and surfaces that come in contact with the food or treats.
