Cancer risk may be linked with genetics in many individuals, but multiple studies today suggest lifestyle compromises and improper dietary routines are also contributing factors to the disease. What we eat and how we manage our stress may also determine the cancer risk. According to Dr Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist and gut health expert trained at AIIMS, Harvard and Stanford Universities, the secret of keeping cancer at bay lies in the beverages we intake. While eating antioxidant foods and staying hydrated is a common suggestion by doctors, Sethi explained how choosing healthier beverages and avoiding harmful energy drinks available in the market can be the key to strengthening the body’s natural defence forces against the disease. Taking to Instagram on Tuesday, October 7, Sethi shared eight powerful beverages that may help lower the risk of cancer. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Saurabh Sethi MD MPH | Gastroenterologist (@doctor.sethi) According to the gut specialist, green tea is rich in EGCG catechins, which are polyphenols considered responsible for all its benefits. “Regular green tea drinkers have a 20-30% lower risk of breast and colorectal cancers,” said Sethi in the video, advocating the green tea’s frequent use. Another beverage loaded with polyphenols and antioxidants is coffee. While excess consumption of coffee and caffeine is harmful to the body, moderate intake of the same is found to protect against liver and endometrial cancer. According to Sethi, regular consumption of coffee lowers the risk of liver cancer by 15 per cent. Talking of beverages, nothing is as energy boosting and healthy as the clean drinking water. Staying adequately hydrated on a regular basis helps us dilute urinary carcinogens, which subsequently counters the risk of urinary tract concerns and bladder cancer. Pomegranate juice The Pomegranate juice is packed with nutrients and a healthy amount of ellagic acid and polyphenols that slow down the growth of cancerous cells. “In prostate cancer patients, pomegranate juice slowed PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) doubling time,” said Sethi. Turmeric golden milk Highlighting the benefits of consuming the turmeric mixed milk, Dr Sethi noted, “Curcumin reduces DNA damage and inflammation. Human trials show reduced oxidative stress markers with daily turmeric.” Berry Smoothies India is home to many healthy berries, rich in fibre and anthocyanins. The anthocyanins are flavonoid compounds that are responsible for the bright colouring of our vegetables and fruits. According to Sethi, these compounds also contain antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties linked with reduced cancer risk. Lemon Juice The gut health expert suggested taking the lemon juice, which has plenty of vitamin C and flavonoids. “Citrus intake (is) linked with approximately 1–15% lower risk of stomach and esophageal cancers,” he said. But those suffering from heartburn or acid reflux are warned that excess consumption may trigger their symptoms. Herbal Teas Considered the healthier alternative to the regular tea we consume, herbal teas based on chamomile, ginger and peppermint have polyphenols and anti-inflammatory compounds, associated with the lower risk of gastric and colorectal cancer.
