Jimmy Kimmel’s talk show will return to the air imminently, a week after his network ABC suspended him from the air “indefinitely” over his comments about Charlie Kirk.
The Walt Disney Company issued a statement Monday confirming that Jimmy Kimmel Live! will return to screens on Tuesday night in the US.
“Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country,” the company said in the statement.
“It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive.”
“We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.”

The surprise backflip came after mounting calls for a boycott of Disney in recent days, with stars like Cynthia Nixon and Noah Centineo among those who’ve publicly cancelled their Disney+ subscriptions.
And overnight, more than 400 Hollywood stars have signed a petition supporting Kimmel and defending “free speech”.
“We the people must never accept government threats to our freedom of speech,” reads an open letter released by the American Civil Liberties Union.
“Efforts by leaders to pressure artists, journalists, and companies with retaliation for their speech strike at the heart of what it means to live in a free country.”

Citing Kimmel’s suspension, the letter continues, “In an attempt to silence its critics, our government has resorted to threatening the livelihoods of journalists, talk show hosts, artists, creatives, and entertainers across the board. This runs counter to the values our nation was built upon, and our Constitution guarantees.”

The petition concludes, “This is the moment to defend free speech across our nation. We encourage all Americans to join us, along with the ACLU, in the fight to defend and preserve our constitutionally protected rights.”
The letter was signed by a slew of A-list celebrities, among them Jennifer Aniston, Tom Hanks, Robert De Niro, Selena Gomez, Jason Bateman, Michael Keaton, Natalie Portman, Martin Short, Maya Rudolph and Pedro Pascal.
The storm erupted over Kimmel’s show-opening monologue during last Monday’s episode of his talk show, when he claimed that slain right-wing commentator Charlie Kirk’s alleged killer was “MAGA” and also poked fun at President Donald Trump’s response to the death of his high-profile supporter.

In announcing he decision to pull his show, the President of broadcast media company Nexstar labelled Kimmel’s jokes “offensive and insensitive at a critical time in our national political discourse.”
The head of another affiliate network behind the suspension went a step further, issuing a list of demands that Kimmel must meet if he wants to keep his job.

Block builder responds to ‘gross’ allegation

They include having the talk show host make a “direct apology” to Charlie Kirk’s family, and for him to make a “meaningful personal donation to the Kirk Family” and to the conservative organisation he co-founded, Turning Point USA.
It is not yet known if Kimmel carried out any of these demands to get his show back.
The host’s return to the television is expected to air around 11:30pm Tuesday night in the US – early afternoon Wednesday here in Australia.
