Lyft is rolling out a new feature, and passengers are outraged.
The taxi app will start showing drivers how frequently a passenger tips before they agree to pick them up.
‘This is a new feature we’re testing with a limited number of drivers,’ a spokesperson for Lyft told the Daily Mail.
‘As with other tests we conduct, we’ll use the data and community feedback to determine if it would be helpful to roll it out more broadly.’
On the driver’s side of the Lyft app, there is a note at the bottom of the screen detailing if the rider tips and how often.
There is also a memo on whether the passenger is usually on time or not.
A screenshot uploaded on Reddit shows an example of the new feature, in which the note says ‘Rider tipped on 88 percent of rides’ and ‘Rider is usually read at pickup.’
But Reddit users in the thread were horrified by the update. ‘Guess Lyft is trying hard to lose business,’ one wrote.

‘Why should I or anyone else tip. Isn’t the job driving someone from point A to point B,’ another said, adding: ‘Why should there be a tip involved? If the driver did something more than get me my destination, then maybe. Screw entitled drivers.’
A different Redditor said: ‘Done with Lyft I guess.’
‘Tipping these days is passive robbery,’ another posted.
Others pointed out that they often tip in cash, which likely means it will not show up o their rider profile. ‘As a rider who tips cash, I very much do not like this,’ one person wrote.
Another angry Reddit user suggested that people go back to basics and ride in taxi cabs instead: ‘Perhaps you should drop this whole Uber, and Lyft c**p, and go back to the professionals.’
But a commenter who claimed to be a driver offered some hope for riders who do not tip.
‘As a Lyft driver, I don’t have time to read all that stuff when I’m driving,’ they said.
The last time Lyft announced a new feature, it was in favor of the rider.

In July, Lyft gave passengers the opportunity to favorite drivers if they had a good ride experience and wanted to use that same driver again.
A driver is notified when they are added to someone’s favorites.
Then they will have priority access to that rider’s future scheduled ride requests.
‘This isn’t just about convenience – it’s about giving you more control over your ride experience,’ the company said in a statement.
‘You can build relationships with drivers who get your vibe, whether that’s keeping the car cool for your commute or knowing when you need quiet time before a big meeting.’
