The Kwara State Fire Service has averted a disaster after a petrol tanker loaded with 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) overturned at Kpasa bridge, along the Ilorin-Ogbomoso express road, Eyenkorin. Tribune Online gathered that the incident, which happened at about 8:00am on Friday, was caused by brake failure, which left the tanker lying upside down. The Head, Media and Publicity of the Kwara state Fire Service, Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, said that the vehicle involved was a petrol tanker (ARG 680 SO), conveying 45,000 litres of PMS from Lagos to Sokoto. ALSO READ: Ogun: Police seek assistance in locating missing mother, child He stated, “Upon receiving the distress call, our firefighters promptly mobilized to the scene and immediately secured the perimeter to prevent ignition. “The team thoroughly drenched the environment to suppress heat emissions from the spilled product under direct sunlight. “They maintained strategic standby while the petrol was being siphoned into another empty tanker to prevent further danger. “Their professional conduct and quick response significantly minimized the risk of fire outbreak, showcasing once again the unwavering commitment and courage of the Kwara State Fire Service in safeguarding lives and property.” Meanwhile, the Director of Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, advised motorists and truck operators, especially, those conveying highly flammable products, to ensure regular maintenance of braking systems and adhere strictly to safe driving standards. He emphasised that safety consciousness is the best prevention against avoidable disasters on our highways.
