Did Thailand Ban Drinking? Here's What You Need To Know

Thailand, long famous for Phuket beach bars, Koh Phangan full-moon parties, and Bangkok’s Khao San Road beer stalls, is reportedly tightening its famous “holiday freedom.” The Thai government has rolled out stricter alcohol regulations, restricting when you can buy and drink. Break the rules, and you could face hefty fines. (File Photo) The famous tourist destination has always had fixed alcohol sale windows, but the latest rules strengthen enforcement and expand monitoring, particularly in public spaces and tourist-heavy zones. (File Photo) The regulated drinking hours now are: 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM to midnight. As per the new regulations, drinking alcohol outside legal hours can attract a fine of up to 10,000 baht (around Rs 28,000). (File Photo) Earlier, the alcohol rules in the country applied to establishments such as bars and liquor stores, which were banned from selling from midnight to 11:00 am and again from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, except in restaurants. The new rules follow months after the country went back on its weed law, and once again criminalised its consumption. Phuket beach bars and Pattaya clubs often thrive well past midnight, drawing both locals and tourists. (File Photo)
