Diablo 4 Season 4: Loot Reborn didn’t only fix the itemization issues in the game; it completely revamped how you interact with gear and items in the game. This came with certain changes in player equipment. Logging into the game, you would see some of the weapons and armor pieces have a red skill on them. These items are officially tagged as Legacy Items. They fall short on performance in the current seasons of Diablo 4 when compared to the current ancestral item pool, making them almost impossible to use.In this guide we will explain what these Legacy Items are and what you can do with them in Diablo 4.Diablo 4: What are Legacy Items?Legacy Items can't be upgraded, making them impractical for in-game progression (Image via Blizzard Entertainment)In Diablo 4, Legacy Items are pieces of gear older than Season 4’s overhauled itemization, meaning they belong to the older system and don't work with the current system in place. So when Blizzard overhauled how itemization works with the Diablo Season 4 Loot Reborn patch, every single item that existed before the patch’s introduction was automatically tagged as a Legacy Item. This tag can be spotted easily by the Red Skull on these items.So are they useless? No, you can use them in your builds, but they can't be upgraded like regular items. So you won't be able to apply tempering (allows you to add new affixes) and masterworking (upgrades tempered gear) on these items.Before the item overhaul of Season 4, the item stats were simple and extremely streamlined; for example, item stats included buffs like "Damage to Close Enemies" and "Damage to Distant Enemies." The overhaul completely altered how item stats work and made them more complex and impactful.From Season 4 onwards, Sacred Items (incompatible with tempering and masterworking) have been phased out completely, and you can get Ancestral Gear, which is compatible with the current systems of Diablo 4.Can Legacy Items be used now in Diablo 4?Absolutely, these items and gears are not invalid and won’t cause any broken effect. They belong in an older version of the game, meaning you can still use them like any other gear in the Eternal Realm.But once you start farming gears belonging to the current loot pool, it gets clear how big the differences are. With new tools you can temper them with affixes as you like and further improve them, making the Legacy Items obsolete in the current meta. Tempering and Masterworking are critical to progress in higher-level content.Sell them or break them down for materials if you have an overflowing stash. While you can technically use Legacy Items, these items are considered a dead end. The current structure of Diablo 4 requires powerful meta builds that can’t be created using Legacy Items.
