Devil Rays, Hawks clinch spots in Territorial Tackle Football League title game

St. Thomas rivals Ivanna Eudora Kean High School and Charlotte Amalie High School will play each other one more time this season — and this one will be for the big prize. The Devil Rays and Hawks both posted wins Saturday in the V.I. Education Department’s Territorial Tackle Football League to secure spots in the league’s championship game next month. Ivanna Eudora Kean High — the league’s two-time defending champions — routed St. Croix’s Central High School 40-8 at the Kean High stadium on St. Thomas in a game that was postponed a day because of an island-wide WAPA power outage. Meanwhile on St. Croix, Charlotte Amalie High — which won the league title in 2018, and was in the finals last season — pulled out an 8-6 victory over St. Croix Educational Complex’s Barracudas at the Complex stadium. That leaves the Devil Rays atop the league standings at 5-0, with the Hawks at 3-2 and the two St. Croix rivals at 1-4 heading into this weekend’s final regular season games. On Friday, Oct. 31, Charlotte Amalie High hosts Central High at the Kean High stadium at 5:30 p.m. Then on Saturday, Nov. 1, Ivanna Eudora Kean High plays Educational Complex at the Complex stadium at 3 p.m. After taking two weeks off, the Territorial Tackle Football League’s championship game will be played on Saturday, Nov. 22, at the Kean High stadium. A game time has yet to be determined. More on Week 5’s games in the Territorial Tackle Football League: Ivanna Eudora Kean High School 40, Central High School 8: Davidson Verdant Jr. accounted for three touchdowns — two coming off long kick returns — and Chrislord Bernard had two others, coming on both sides of the ball, as the Devil Rays routed the Caribs. Verdant opened the game with an 80-yard kick return for the first touchdown (as well as adding the two-point conversion). He then returned a punt 70 yards for a score midway through the second quarter en route to a 32-0 halftime lead. Verdant capped Kean High’s scoring with a 60-yard touchdown run on the Devil Rays’ final possession of the fourth quarter. Bernard’s first score came off a 19-yard touchdown pass from Shacoy Emanuel on Kean High’s second possession, with the second coming off a 40-yard interception return early in the second quarter. Giwinsley Joseph and Sikhoy Fahie each ran in a pair of two-point conversions for the Devil Rays. No information was available on who scored or when for Central High. Charlotte Amalie High School 8, St. Croix Educational Complex 6: The Hawks rallied in the third quarter to pull out another close win over a St. Croix team in the past three weeks. After a scoreless first half, the Barracudas took a 6-0 lead when Dlany Hassell returned the opening kickoff of the second half 70 yards for a touchdown. However, Charlotte Amalie High responded with Naji Liburd’s touchdown run and two-point conversion run to take the lead midway through the third quarter. The Hawks then saved the win with a key defensive stop in the fourth quarter, with Deville Stanley intercepting a Educational Complex pass on the game’s final series.
