Detroit bakery returns after 5-month pause, focusing on catering and special events

DETROIT – The owner of a popular bakery in Detroit is bringing back her business after temporarily closing in June.
It’s been 5 months since the owner of Sister Pie, Lisa Ludwinski announced on Facebook back in May that her business would “enter a period of rest and radical reconfiguration.” Starting this month, the bakery that sits in Detroit’s West Village on Kercheval Ave. will transition from a current pause in full-scale retail operations to a “beta phase.”
During the closure, Sister Pie has been hosting pop-ups, experimenting with new menu items and planning the future.
In an online post, Ludwinski outlined her bakery’s vision for 2030 along with some updates for the rest of 2025. She said the focus is now on building back the business she founded in 2012 (she opened the storefront in 2015) piece by piece, starting with catering and special events ahead of the busy holiday season. That will include a Thanksgiving package that will feature pies, cookies and limited-edition merchandise.
Ludwinski said she’ll work with a small team to run production operations. That team will include two part-time staffers to help with production. Ludwinski said she hasn’t planned out hours of operation and will reopen the store once the business establishes a solid financial foundation.
