There’s not much left to say about Derek Jeter’s legendary career on the diamond. The 5x World Series champion’s clutch plays and leadership gave the Yankees one of their most successful eras. His brief, underrated film career. During FOX’s MLB panel with Alex Rodriguez and David Ortiz breaking down the Blue Jays’ ALCS Game 6 win, the crew took a lighthearted break to revisit a hilarious clip from Jeter’s cameo in the 2010 comedy The Other Guys. And Jeter opened up about how a Red Sox fan actually convinced him to do a part. “Great, you know. I host Saturday Night Live. That’s when I first met Will Ferrell. Yeah, and then Wahlberg. Wahlberg is a huge Red Sox fan. He huge Red Sox fan. So when he actually asked me to do it. I said, I have to do it. Of course, it’s a good one.” Jeter opened up about the American actor Mark Wahlberg as the reason for him to make his acting debut. Jeter had a cameo where he plays himself, but not the calm, collected captain Yankees fans are used to seeing. Instead, Jeter becomes the victim of a comically disastrous mistake. In the movie, Wahlberg’s character accidentally shoots Jeter in the tunnel at Yankee Stadium while working security during the World Series. And talking about Mark Wahlberg, his love for the Red Sox runs deep. Reportedly, back in 2022, his restaurant chain, Wahlburgers, even inked a three-year deal with the Red Sox to become the team’s Official Burger partner. And let’s not forget when he threw out the ceremonial first pitch at Fenway Park in 2009 before a game against the Mariners. What’s funny, though, is seeing Derek Jeter, the ultimate Yankees poster boy, taking cues from a die-hard Red Sox fan. It’s a bit ironic, too! But then again, stars like Jeter and David Ortiz have a kind of universal appeal that easily transcends team lines. Before featuring in The Other Guys, he had a small role in Anger Management (2003), starring Adam Sandler. Once again playing himself, Jeter appears in a therapy session complaining about being in a slump, only to be reminded by Sandler’s character that he’s Derek Jeter, one of baseball’s biggest stars. It’s a short cameo, but it perfectly showcases his ability to laugh at himself. He also made memorable television appearances, including a guest spot on Seinfeld (1996), where he received batting tips from George Costanza. So, while Jeter’s filmography is limited, his roles highlight a playful, self-aware side that fans didn’t often see during his baseball career.
