Democrats win key off-year elections

WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - The Democratic party is excited after sweeping a series of high profile elections across the country. At the same time, Republicans are looking for answers. President Donald Trump says part of Republicans poor performance last night can be blamed on the president not being on the ballot. Experts say political winds are trending toward Democratic pickups in next years midterms. Zohran Mamdani is introducing himself as the next mayor of New York City. “I am a Democratic Socialist.” President Donald Trump says Republicans will go to the drawing board after a series of loses in 2025 elections. He addressed GOP senators during a breakfast meeting at the White House Wednesday morning, “I thought we’d have a discussion after the press leaves about what last night represented, and what we should do about it, and also about the shut down. How that relates to last night. Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani is now mayor of New York. And Democrats won races for governor in New Jersey and Virginia by at least 13 points. Justice Democrats says a focus on kitchen table issues is working. Usamah Andrabi is the Justice Democrats Communications Director, “Affordability is a broad word. We talk about it in such a broad way, but it’s about diagnosing what that means for communities on the ground. So in New York, affordability means people can’t afford to pay their rent.” George Washington University political science professor Matt Dallek says Democrats could see similar success in the midterms if the economy does not improve; in part – because Trump won’t be on that ballot either. “In a non-presidential year, when Trump is not on the ballot, the electorate looks very different, and it’s much more favorable to Democrats. So that I think bodes well for Democrats in the midterms.” Usamah Andrabi of Justice Democrats says the success came despite poor polling for Democrats – so they still have work to do. “I think a prerequisite for Democrats to win the midterms is a robust Democratic primary process and Congressional primaries across the country, so that voters can have a choice in electing candidates that actually excite them.” Californians voted on a measure that could add more Democratic districts to vote for in 2026.
