Incumbent Democrat Jeion Ward took home reelection in a landslide victory against Republican challenger John Chapman in the race for House District 87 in a repeat of the district’s 2023 election. Ward will serve a two-year term in the House representing the 87th District, which includes parts of Hampton. As of 9:28 p.m. with 26% ballots counted, Ward collected 81% of ballots cast, according to the Associated Press, which called the race for her. Chapman garnered 19% of the vote. Ward, 71, has amassed a long tenure in the House. She was first elected to the House in 2004. She defeated Chapman in a 2023 race as well. Before the election, Ward said her top priority was strengthening the workforce and empowering working families.
