Demi Lovato on Feeling Safe In Queer Spaces
The singer said, “My connection with queer club culture is… I love going out with my friends. “I love dancing, and I love doing that in queer spaces because it feels safe to me,” Comparing her experience with going to a straight club, she continued, “If I were to go to a straight club, it just wouldn’t feel as safe. I feel there’s more danger,”
Demi explained that when she goes to a queer space, she feels safe and secure knowing that she is with her friends and will have a great time. “I just have always felt safer in queer spaces, and I think that’s because queer people have a way of living so authentically that it makes me feel like I can live authentically,” the singer said.
Demi Lovato Shares Her Experience as a Queer Kid
Demi Lovato revealed how important it is for her to be surrounded by other queer people like herself who make her feel safe to be her authentic self without any hesitation. “Being queer myself, having people around me that make me feel safe to be myself is something I always longed for as a kid in Texas,” she revealed.
While talking about her life in Texas as a queer kid, the singer said, “As a queer kid in Texas, I had a lot of religious shame around coming out, and I think that’s because growing up in the Bible Belt – or maybe Texas isn’t in the Bible Belt, but you know what I mean. Same thing. So now I get to go out, and I get to live authentically and be myself, and it feels amazing.”
Demi Lovato On Embracing Her Queer Identity
Demi Lovato has been transparent about her queer identity for years. In 2020, the pop star revealed that she first realised that she was queer while watching the iconic make-out scene between Selma Blair and Sarah Michelle Gellar in Cruel Intentions. Later in 2021, she came out as non-binary and confirmed her sexual identity as pansexual.
Demi explained that she is embracing and celebrating her queer identity in her music also. “I went to a queer party and played Kiss,” she said, before mentioning that she wanted to share it with her fans first. “It went really great. I’m so happy with how everyone loved it,” the singer added.
