Delhi: Bomb threats create panic in schools, former CM criticises security lapses
Delhi witnessed widespread panic on Saturday as several schools and educational institutions received bomb threats, prompting evacuations and security checks. Arvind Kejriwal, AAP Convener and former Delhi Chief Minister, sharply criticised the ruling BJP government over its inability to ensure the safety of students.
In a post on X, Kejriwal highlighted the lack of accountability despite repeated threats over the past year. “Delhi’s schools are repeatedly receiving bomb threats. Panic has ensued everywhere, schools are shut down, and fear is spreading among children and parents… but in a year, no one has been caught, nor has any action been taken,” he wrote. He added, “The four-engine BJP government can’t even manage the capital’s security. Parents are living in fear every day. When will all this end?”
Schools affected, precautionary measures taken
Among the schools targeted on Saturday were DPS Dwarka, Krishna Model Public School, and Sarvodaya Vidyalaya. In response to the threats, students and staff were promptly evacuated, and police teams along with bomb disposal squads were dispatched to the sites.
DPS Dwarka took the precaution of closing the school for the day and postponing mid-term exams. A circular issued by the school stated:
“Dear Parents, kindly note that the school will remain closed today i.e Saturday, 20 September 2025 due to unavoidable circumstances. All school buses and private vans/cabs are being sent back immediately. Parents are requested to kindly be there at the stops to pick up their wards. Mid-term exams scheduled for the day stand postponed. Fresh dates will be intimated shortly.”
Colleges and other institutions also targeted
Bomb threats were not limited to schools. Colleges, including the University College of Medical Sciences (UCMS), Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC), and the Delhi Chief Minister’s Secretariat, received threats earlier this month. UCMS received a threat via email on September 9, leading to a complete evacuation. The premises were later cleared by the Bomb Disposal Squad at 1:30 pm after confirming the threat was false.
According to DCP Nidhin Valsan, the email sent to the dean of MAMC did not contain specific details, but security protocols were immediately activated and bomb squads were dispatched.
Security concerns and public anxiety
These repeated incidents have raised serious concerns about the safety of students and staff across Delhi. Parents have expressed growing anxiety over the lack of tangible action, while opposition leaders have called for stricter monitoring and swift investigation into the threats.
Security experts emphasise the need for continuous surveillance, awareness programmes in schools, and improved coordination between police and educational institutions to prevent potential risks.
With repeated threats and no arrests made over the past year, the city’s education community remains on high alert, leaving parents and students anxious about the safety of their institutions.
