Dear Editor, As a Guyanese-Canadian legal professional with a background in political science, I am deeply troubled by the political situation since November 3, 2025. The denial of democratic rights and the government’s blatant delays are evident. Upon taking office, the Leader of the Opposition (LOO) will face immediate challenges, particularly in establishing authority and setting priorities. The urgency of this role is crucial for ensuring government accountability, as the LOO serves as the primary critic of the government’s actions and policies, presenting essential alternative viewpoints. Starting immediately enhances the opposition’s effectiveness, allowing the LOO to guide WIN’s legislative agenda, appoint shadow ministers, and actively participate in debates. Delayed action hampers the LOO’s ability to represent constituents’ interests and stifles the legislative process in Guyana. Currently, in theory, and in the premises, the LOO is positioned as a vital critic within the political landscape, with expectations to hold the government accountable immediately after the 13th Parliament’s first sitting. WIN’s leader plays a pivotal role in proposing alternative policies and ensuring diverse perspectives shape the legislative process. Moreover, should the government lose the confidence of the House, the opportunity for the Opposition to form a new government arises, further underscoring its critical function. In conclusion, the LOO is indispensable for maintaining democratic integrity and political discourse in Guyana. Immediate engagement is not just desirable but essential for the health of the nation’s democracy. Mr. Mohamed Shabeer Zafar, Barrister-at-law and Solicitor
