After a blowout loss to the Arizona Wildcats, Colorado head coach Deion Sanders revealed he’s making a change at the starting quarterback spot. Sanders is turning the keys over to freshman quarterback Julian Lewis, who saw his first extended playing time of the season in the Buffaloes 52-17 loss to Arizona. The five-star quarterback recruit finished the game 9-of-17 passing for 121 yards and a touchdown. “He’s a young kid. He’s going to make young kids’ mistakes, but it’s up to the staff to get him prepared, to get it ready so he could be concise and precise,” Sanders said of Lewis. “He has to make good reads and keep the ball out of the run when he feels pressure and just be himself.” As Sanders prepares for a new quarterback to start for his team – the third of the season – he quietly made another major change to the offense. Sanders demoted offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur to quarterbacks coach and stripped the former NFL head coach of play-calling duties. “The person didn’t want to be named because of the sensitivity of the situation. The person said Colorado tight ends coach and passing game coordinator Brett Bartolone has called plays instead of Shurmur since the Utah game,” Schrotenboer reported. Colorado managed just 17 points in the first game called by Bartolone, who will have a new starting quarterback when the Buffaloes face off against West Virginia this weekend.
