Dehradun Cloudburst: Schools shut after heavy rain and flooding

All schools from Class 1 to 12, along with Anganwadi centres in Dehradun district, will remain closed on Tuesday, September 16, following a night of intense rainfall and multiple cloudbursts in the region. Authorities issued the order citing safety concerns after the Meteorological Center in Dehradun warned of more heavy downpours. Several parts of Sahastradhara were hit by sudden cloudbursts, sending rivers and streams surging beyond their banks. The flash floods damaged roadside shops and eateries, and waterlogged large swathes of the area.— DIPR_UK (@DIPR_UK) Government response Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami confirmed that teams from the police and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) had been deployed to assist with evacuation and relief measures. “Our priority is to ensure the safety of people and to provide immediate help in the affected areas,” he said.Live Events In Rishikesh, the Chandrabhaga river spilled over onto the highway, leaving several vehicles stranded. SDRF personnel managed to rescue three people trapped in the water.”Due to heavy rainfall, water level of the Chandhaga River rose, causing water to flood up to the highway and trapping several vehicles. During this, 03 people were stranded in the middle of the river, whom the SDRF team promptly rescued and safely brought to a secure location,” SDRF Uttarakhand Police said on X. In another incident, the Tamsa river overflowed into the Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple premises, flooding the courtyard and partially submerging the statue of Hanuman. The inner sanctum of the shrine, however, remained safe. With the forecast predicting continued heavy rainfall, officials have urged residents to avoid venturing into vulnerable areas near rivers and streams.
