Debbie Harry Wants This Oscar Nominee To Play Her in the Blondie Movie

One of the biggest names in rock and roll has an upcoming biopic, and they already know the actress they’d like to see in the role. In an interview with the Sunday Times, Blondie frontwoman and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Debbie Harry revealed that she has two movies in the works with director Charlotte Wells. “If it were somebody like Florence Pugh, I would be in heaven,” Harry said. “I just think she’s a great actor and she could do anything.” Pugh Has Mutual Interest in the Role Pugh’s recent success supports her claim. The English actress earned critical acclaim for her roles in films like “Fighting With My Family” and “Midsommar.” She also earned an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actress for her role in “Little Women.” Recently, Pugh played Jean Tatlock in the epic “Oppenheimer,” and reprised her role as Yelena Belova in multiple Marvel movies and shows, including this summer’s “Thunderbolts.” Pugh expressed interest in the role years ago, telling Entertainment Weekly that she’d love to play in a Blondie film because the band was “so cool.” “I grew up pretending I was Dusty Springfield ’cause she had a really low voice, and I was like, ‘Hey, I have a low voice too,’ Pugh said at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in 2020. “Those two.” Pugh has experience playing a musician in a film, as she played an aspiring singer alongsider Morgan Freeman in 2023’s “A Good Person.” Kirsten Dunst was slated to play Harry in a biopic that was being worked on over a decade ago, but the film was never made. Harry and Blondie’s Next Act The upcoming Blondie biopic and documentary will coincide with the release of new music, marking the band’s first album since 2017’s “Pollinator.” Harry confirmed that the band had new music in the works, and that next year they would be releasing a new album titled “High Noon.” “I don’t have as much endurance, but I can focus my energy a lot better. The new album — we really put it out on that one,” Harry told the Sunday Times, proud of her recent work. Still, she noted that she loves playing the hits – including “Heart of Glass” and “Rapture,” the band’s two biggest songs. “You do songs so many times that it becomes mechanical. With those two songs, for me it’s never mechanical.” We’ll see if Pugh gets her chance to sing those same songs in the upcoming Blondie movie, made by the director of 2022’s “Aftersun.”
